Memo to Cindy McCain, Pat Buchanan, Bill O'Reilly, and anyone else outraged by Michelle Obama's comments about pride in America
These images will probably make your hearts swell with pride in your country (particularly Mrs. McCain, who so emphatically stated she has always been proud of America), which legally sanctioned the discrimination against citizens of color for generations.

And, if you think a whole lot has changed, allow me to show a symbol that has been in the news fairly recently:

America may try, but the fact will always remain that she is a country built on racism. Anyone expressing pride in America is probably not going to be a person of color. I'm sure you also believe that had the Nazis been rounding up all the Episcopalians or Lutherans or Presbyterians in Europe and systematically exterminating them, we still would have waited until we were attacked to get into it. Or that if it had been Germany who'd attacked us in 1941, all Americans of German descent would have been pulled from their homes and placed in concentration camps. Keep dreaming.

This is a flimsy platform upon which to try to discredit someone. Get over it, and talk about something with some meaning.

You are so right, Bettye! Up until now, you'd never know McCain had a wife, but now she speaks and she picks something dumb to say as if Michelle is stupid or ignorant. That's a play straight out of Hillary's book and the media bit.

If that's the worse they can come up with, bring it on!

Preach, because when I heard those people criticize her, I thought of all the things Blacks have had to go through. We just got some rights in what the late 60s and even now we have to have affirmative action on jobs just to get our foot in the door...don't get me started. I can go on and on.

anyone with an ounce of common sense understood immediately, what she was saying and what she meant. which just goes to show, the media and his opponents are so desperate to get something on this man, that they will grab anything they can.

Thanks for your comments. It's unfortunate that people cannot seem to grasp the simple, sad truth that our country has been kinder to some people than to others. Our country has made great strides, but it has not necessarily been kind to women and minorities (in other words, those other than white men). Of these people, African-Americans have by far been maligned the most. This is a fact that will never change, because history cannot be rewritten.

I'm sure that Mr. McCain longed for his freedom during his years of captivity as much as our ancestors did . . . and, of course, when it was finally granted to him he was immediately accepted into mainstream society. We were denied that. We should never forget.

Thank you again.
